Overcoming Sunday Scaries with Self Touch, Kirtan Kriya, and Body Awareness

Person in a peaceful setting, enjoying a moment of calm to reduce anxiety and overcome Sunday scaries.

Sunday Scaries: Real or a myth?

Apparently, very real! Did you know that 80% of Americans experience stress or anxiety on Sunday evenings as they anticipate the start of the workweek?

This reflects strong conditioning that goes WAY back. Which is unfortunate, right? Because Sunday is one of the few socially acceptable days to simply rest.

If you’re stuck in your head, envisioning alllll the things next week might bring, I invite you to pause. You deserve it. You deserve this time to restore peace of mind and presence of body, releasing any concerns about the future.

Try one (or all three!) of my three favorite practices to luxuriate on Sunday night.

1. Making the shift from mind to body

In our modern world, the mind rules and rarely catches a break. And that’s why it feels SO GOOD when you allow yourself special moments away from the mind and into the body.

Here’s how I make this shift:

I bring myself back to the here and now.

By taking a moment to pause.

Bringing awareness to my breath (without trying to change it).

Slowly bringing my attention to my body.

Noticing my hands and feet.

Noticing how they feel against the surface.

Bringing my attention outward.

Focusing on an object in my environment.

Now, seeing if I can simultaneously focus on all of these things at once.

2. Compassionate self touch

Self touch deepens your presence in the body while reducing anxiety and resetting the nervous system. When we’re able to sit with the uncomfortable feeling, oftentimes it will either reduce in intensity or shift to something else.

Try this:

🤍 Cross your arms on opposite sides as if you’re giving yourself a hug.

🤍 Wrap your hands around your arms while gently squeezing them as you caress them from the elbow to the shoulder.

🤍 As you exhale squeeze, and as you inhale let go.

I like to say a few comforting words, speaking to myself as I would to a small child or best friend:

I see you

I feel you

It's okay to feel this way, even though it’s not comfortable

I love you,

I’m here for you

I’m with you

I understand you

3. Kirtan Kriya meditation

An absolute game changer for calming the mind and reducing anxiety. This powerful yet super simple Kundalini meditation has been scientifically proven to rewire the brain!

All you do is chant or sing SA TA NA MA while using a specific finger movement.

SA means birth,

TA means life,

NA means death,

MA means rebirth.

When you say SA, put index finger to thumb,.

When you say TA, put middle finger to thumb,.

When you say NA, put ring finger to thumb,.

And when you say MA, put pinky finger to thumb.

Repeat this mantra for 12 minutes:

2 minutes out loud → 2 minutes whispering → 4 minutes silently in your mind → 2 minutes whispering → 2 minutes out loud.

Xx
