The Aromatic Connection: How Fragrances Influence Hormonal Balance

Have you ever experienced a sudden rush of emotions or felt invigorated after smelling a particular fragrance? It’s hormonal! Our olfactory senses have a fascinating (and delicate) relationship with our endocrine system.

In this blog post, we will explore how fragrances elicit a hormonal response, why we love it so much, and why you should cut out fragrances while balancing your hormones.

The Olfactory System: Hormones & Emotions

Our attraction to fragrance is SO human. The candle industry is huge after all, because it ties together two of our natural inclinations: Fragrance and fire.

But how does it work, exactly?

The roof of your nasal passages houses clusters of neurons that connect directly to the limbic system (the emotional center of the brain). When you inhale fragrances, these neurons trigger a hormonal response throughout the body.

This response can impact your mood, energy levels, and overall well-being.

Love lavender? It’s been linked to reduced stress and anxiety because it stimulates the release of calming hormones like serotonin and GABA (gamma-aminobutyric acid).

Meanwhile, uplifting scents like citrus or peppermint can trigger the release of dopamine and norepinephrine, promoting alertness and positivity.

Balancing Hormones: How Fragrances Get In The Way

When fragrances stimulate neurons in the nasal passages, the endocrine system receives signals to amp up the production of certain hormones. While this may be beneficial in some cases, excessive hormonal fluctuations can disrupt the body's delicate balance.

If you are struggling with hormone-related health issues (estrogen dominance, PCOS, Endometriosis, thyroid imbalances, fertility issues, or adrenal fatigue) I highly recommend cutting out fragrances.

Constant exposure to strong scents, especially synthetic ones found in perfumes, air fresheners, and scented products, can overload the endocrine system and cause disruptive symptoms like painful periods or adult acne.

Well, What About Natural Fragrances?

Natural fragrances like essential oils are preferable to synthetic ones, yes. But they can still trigger a hormonal response.

And when you’re already overproducing certain hormones, like SO many of us today (hello estrogen dominance), further stimulation puts unnecessary stress on the body.

My Recommendation? Put the lavender oil on hold as you begin your hormone-balancing journey. While I don’t think it’s the sole culprit, your goal is to return your body to a healthy baseline, free from unnecessary stimulation.

I personally suggest cutting out all fragrances during this phase (perfumes, fragrances found in skincare, personal care products, household products, etc).

What Should I Use Instead?

It’s 2023 and we’re entering a renaissance of fragrance-free options (finally!). Because it’s good business, some companies advertise “fragrance-free” products that contain other disruptive chemicals. So you have to be a little careful.
